ECO4 Scheme Grant

The ECO4 (energy company obligation) grant has been extended to December 31st 2026, but there is no additional funding available for new installations.

At Outlook Energy Solutions, we’re currently working on the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. If you’d like to speak to a member of our team, feel free to call 0800 464 7292.

The ECO4 grant provided a range of energy-efficient measures for low-income households all over the UK.

An ECO4 grant was designed to fully fund home insulation, air source heating, solar panel technology, and a new boiler to power your inefficient heating system. It was designed to help households improve their energy efficiency, thus reducing their carbon emissions and energy bills. The government-backed scheme used several energy-saving measures to help warm thousands of homes across the UK.

Which energy efficiency measures were funded under the ECO4 grant?

There were several heating measures and energy-efficient upgrades covered by the ECO4 scheme that aim to improve energy efficiency in your home.

The ECO4 scheme provided the following measures for the least energy-efficient homes in the UK, in a bid to reduce energy costs and bring families out of fuel poverty:

  • Non-condensing boiler upgraded to an A-rated boiler
  • Unfit storage heaters upgraded to high heat retention electric storage heaters
  • Inefficient heating was upgraded to air-source heat pumps
  • Wall insulation (cavity wall insulation, solid wall insulation, and internal wall insulation)
  • Roof or loft insulation
  • Ventilation
  • Heating controls
  • Solar PV systems

Who was eligible for the Energy Company Obligation scheme?

The government’s eco scheme applied to thousands of vulnerable households across the UK. This means they could improve their property’s energy efficiency rating and reduce energy bills if they received the following benefits:

  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Income Support (IS)
  • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit (PCGC)
  • Working Tax Credit (WTC)
  • Child Tax Credit (CTC)
  • Universal Credit (UC)
  • Housing Benefit
  • Pension Credit Savings Credit (PCSC)
  • Child Benefit (with dependencies)

ECO4 Scheme FAQs:

What is the ECO4 grant?

The ECO4 grant was a government-backed scheme that was designed to fund the energy efficiency improvement of homes all over the UK.

Households that received existing financial support from the government were eligible for the ECO4 grant, which provided a variety of options to improve the heat efficiency of their home.

How long can the process take?

The timeline for receiving support via the ECO4 scheme varied depending on a few factors. Generally, it could take several weeks, or even months, after submission before receiving a review.

Once applications had been approved, a free survey of the home was arranged, which would only take around 15 minutes. Then, when everything had been arranged, the work could be completed, which would take no longer than three days from start to finish.

Could I get my boiler replaced by the ECO4 grant?

Yes, it was possible to have your boiler replaced by ECO4 funding. If you had a broken boiler and would like that to be replaced, your boiler must have been deemed uneconomical to repair.

How do I find out if I have an EPC and what the rating is?

An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) shows how energy efficient your home is on a scale from A to G (most to least efficient). You can check if your property has one by visiting the government’s website. Enter your address and discover your rating.

How much money could I get from the ECO4 scheme?

Individual applicants could receive between £7,000 and £20,000 worth of ECO4 grant funding. The amount received is based on factors such as property type, existing energy efficiency measures, and income.

In total, the ECO4 scheme had £4 billion of funding available. For eligible homeowners, it was designed to cover 100% of the cost of improving inefficient homes.

When does the ECO4 scheme expire?

The ECO4 scheme was originally scheduled to end on March 31st 2026, but the UK government initiative has been extended until December 2026, giving low-income households a greater window to reduce carbon emissions and lower energy bills.
