What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government-funded scheme for homes in England and Wales. It’s designed to help homeowners and small businesses pay for low-carbon heating systems (mainly heat pumps and some biomass boilers) to replace fossil fuel heating systems.

The scheme is installer‑led: you contact an MCS‑certified installer, like us, and we’ll apply for the grant on your behalf.

How much funding can I receive?

You could receive up to £7,500 off the cost and installation of your new low-carbon heating system, depending on which system you choose. For air source heat pumps and ground or water source heat pumps, you will get £7,500 off the cost and installation. For the cost and installation of a biomass boiler, which is usually used in rural locations, you will receive £5000.

Either way, you receive a large discount on a project that increases the energy efficiency of your home, lowering your carbon emissions and energy costs.

How does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme work?

If successful with your application, the scheme will provide an upfront grant towards the cost and installation of:

• Air source heat pumps
• Water or ground source heat pumps
• Biomass boilers in limited situations

It is part of the UK’s wider plan to decarbonise heating in buildings and support the move away from gas and oil.

Who is eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is designed for property and business owners in England and Wales, and can be used for homes and small, non-domestic buildings that have a heating capability of 5 kWth.

The grant is solely used to replace the fossil fuel heating systems already in place in the property or non-domestic building, such as oil, gas, electric or LPG boilers and storage heaters. It cannot be used to update or replace an already existing low-carbon heating system.
