How does the free boiler scheme work for disabled people?
The government’s ECO scheme requires the ‘big six’ energy suppliers – EDF Energy, British Gas, E.ON, Scottish Power, SSE, and npower – to provide grants towards low-income, energy-inefficient households across the UK.
Homes with boilers older than seven years and who receive disability-related benefits could gain funding to lower their energy bills and carbon emissions.
So, if you live with a disability, you’re a homeowner or private tenant, and your boiler is more than seven years old, you may qualify for the ECO4 scheme for a free boiler replacement.
What are the eligibility criteria for boiler grants for disabled people?
There are three categories of criteria you (or someone in your household) must meet to qualify for free boiler grants for disabled people. They are:
- You, or someone in your household, must receive disability-related or other benefits
- You must be a homeowner or private tenant (but not a council tenant)
- Your boiler is 7+ years old
Do I need to receive disability-related benefits?
If you are classed as being disabled, there are many different types of disability-related benefits you could receive.
This includes payments such as Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Attendance Allowance, Severe Disablement Allowance, Universal Credit, and others.
For a lot of people living with disability, they’ll receive PIP, as this has mostly replaced DLA. If your disability prevents you from working, which impacts your household income, you may also receive Universal Credit, which would be one of the qualifying benefits of the free boiler grant.
